We finished
our first week in our new classroom, getting to know one another and the
routines that will help us with our learning. After putting our things away and washing our hands, we look at books in our classroom. We are learning to take care of books as we'll have our first visit to the library next week.
Our week began with a visit from Elder Pablo, a member of the Blackfoot tribe, who met with all SVS students over ZOOM in an interactive introduction to Indigenous Ways of Knowing. His visit marked the beginning of a year long exploration of Buffalo Teachings.
We’ll be learning about respect for ourselves, each other, and the Land as we gather around this mural just outside our classroom.
On Tuesday, we learned about Terry Fox, a Canadian hero who attempted to run across Canada in hopes of raising money to help the scientists find a cure for cancer. We learned how Terry had to persevere.... never give up!
We made a tracing of our shoe and talked about how we all work together to finish the run that Terry started.
On Wednesday, we learned about a little girl named Phyllis who was excited to go to school for the first time, wearing a bright orange shirt that her Granny bought her. When she arrived at school her bright orange shirt was taken away. Listening to Phyllis Webstad's true story and the story behind Orange Shirt Day led to a discussion on how we should all be free to choose the clothes we wear.
